Bed bugs rarely announce themselves. Most people in Mandeville find them the same way: a row of itchy welts on an arm or shoulder, then a closer look at the mattress seam and a scatter of dark specks that smear when wiped. By the time bites show up, the infestation has usually been building for weeks, because a single female lays eggs steadily and the first generation hides within a few feet of where you sleep.
Strip the bed and check the piping along the mattress edge, the box spring staples, and the underside of the bed frame where two pieces of wood meet. You're looking for three things: rust-coloured spotting, pale shed skins that look like empty shells, and live insects roughly the size and colour of an apple seed. Fleas jump and bite ankles; mosquito bites appear anywhere and fade fast. Bed bug bites cluster and recur on skin that was against the sheet. If you only find bites and nothing else, pull the headboard off the wall and check the back of it, and look at the seam of any upholstered chair someone sleeps in. Secondhand furniture, hotel luggage and a guest's overnight bag account for most of the introductions we see in homes around the north shore.
A proper job starts with an inspection that maps the spread, because treating one bedroom when bugs have moved into an adjoining room guarantees a callback. From there, treatment combines a residual product applied to harbourage points — seams, frames, baseboards, outlet plates, carpet edges — with a contact material for live insects and, where appropriate, a growth regulator so any eggs that hatch later don't reach breeding age. Eggs are the reason one visit is almost never enough. Expect a follow-up roughly two weeks out, and sometimes a third, timed against the hatch rather than the calendar.
Your prep matters as much as the chemistry. Laundering bedding and clothing on high heat and bagging it afterwards, clearing floor clutter so baseboards are reachable, and holding off on vacuuming until after treatment all affect whether the second visit finds anything. Don't throw out the mattress on day one. Encasements are cheaper and they trap what's inside. And don't move to the couch — that's how a bedroom problem becomes a living room problem.
Price tracks the number of rooms involved, the level of furniture and clutter, whether the structure is a single-family home or a shared-wall unit, and how many return visits the situation needs. A studio apartment caught early is a different job from a four-bedroom house where the bugs have reached two floors. We quote from inspection rather than over the phone, and estimates are free, so you're not paying to find out the scale of it.
Before you book anyone — us included — ask how many follow-ups are included in the quoted figure, what prep they expect from you, and whether they'll re-inspect rather than simply re-spray. Ask for proof of licensing and insurance. Palus Property Defense works with licensed contractors and carries insurance, and we stand behind the work with a satisfaction guarantee.
We cover Mandeville, Madisonville, Abita Springs and Baker, Monday through Friday, 8AM to 6PM, with same-day service available depending on the schedule. Call to arrange an inspection; we take standard payment methods at the time of service.
